Gates and Buffett’s Billionaires Dinner To Encourage Private Philanthropy

Bill Gates, Melinda Gates, and Warren Buffett have been hosting a series of dinner meetings in the US to catalyse the scale of private philanthropy. Their direct target is billionaires, whom they wish to see greatly raise the amounts they give to charities, of any and all kinds. Starting with the Forbes list of the 400 wealthiest Americans, they are driving to get the super-rich to pledge at least 50% of their net worth to charity during their lifetimes or at death. Melinda Gates explains: “They don’t want to plan for their death; they worry that they’ll need to hire someone to help with the work; they just don’t want to take the time to think about it all”. So the initial goal of the pledge campaign, she thinks, must be simply to cut through that and get them moving in the direction of giving.
