The U.S. based NoVo Foundation (run by the daughter in-law of billionaire philanthropist Warren Buffet) has recently launched the website www.whatididnotbuy.org. The site encourages would-be Christmas shoppers to identify the gift they would have bought for a friend, colleague or loved one and then instead of ‘checking out’ swapping it for a charitable donation of the same value.
The idea is to curb excess, prevent the giving of unwanted gifts and encourage philanthropy while making sure it’s still ‘the thought that counts’.
