How The World’s Top Philanthropists Would Spend $10 billion

Prompted by Bill Gates’ recent $ 10 billion pledge to developing vaccines to be distributed to children from impoverished regions, this Wall Street Journal article features a number of prominent philanthropists and charity executives discussing how they would spend the money to create maximum social impact. The interviewees include Mo Ibraham - founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Dr. Judith Rodin - president of the Rockefeller Foundation and Sir Ronald Cohen - founder of Apax Partners. Their suggestions range from developing ‘carbon-capture’ toilets in the developing world, to creating social investment banks to combating climate change. However, what most of the suggestions have in common is that they focus on sustainable, fecund investment: as Dr. Rodin puts it; “How would I give away $ 10 billion? I wouldn’t. I would invest it in innovations that have the potential to mobilize multiple billions more.”
