Over one third of grant applications submitted by charities in the past year were actually ineligible for funding according to new research by the Directory of Social Change (DSC). Out of a pool of one million grant applications, 361,000 did not meet the criteria of the funders. These pointless applications result in a substantial waste of time for both fundraisers and funders alike. Ben Wittenberg, a director at DSC, apportions responsibility to both the fundraisers - who indiscriminately blanket applications to various funders - and to the funders - who offer poor guidance and instructions. Surprisingly, this data reveals an improvement on a similar survey conducted two years in which 52% of applications where not eligible.
