Will The Buffett-Gates Pledge Really Help The Poor?

In the Wall Street Journal this week, Paul Frank discusses Pablo Eisenburg’s recent contribution to the journal of philanthropy. Eisenberg (a senior fellow at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute) presents a rather unfavourable picture of the impact the Buffet-Gates Pledge will have on the poor. He states that rich philanthropists in general favour philanthropic giving that supports the more privileged in society. Eisenburg identifies universities, colleges, hospitals and arts institutions as falling into this ‘privileged’ category. By contrast, he states they “rarely make large gifts to social-service groups, grass-roots organisations, or non-profit groups that focus on the poor or minorities.”
